Train consistently and smart. Run some local races and hope to lower PR's every once in awhile.

Long-Term Running Goals:

I would love to see a 5:XX for a mile just one more time. Go under 20 in a 5K. And a sub 40 for a 10K.

I had court after work today.  Finally got to bed around 11am and was up at 4pm.  Very shortly after dinner, and on a full tummy, I went for my run.  I could just tell I was off a bit.  Like running with my mind in a fog.  I am sure it is just from the drastic change in my sleep schedule.  I decided to run 2.5 slow.  Then I wanted to try some faster miles.  This something I know I should do from time to time, but rarely do.  I wanted to see how long I could hold a 7:00 pace.  I made it 3 miles before I started to really tire.  It was weird.  Everything was going ok, then everything seemed to shut down at once...legs, cardio, and mental state.  I stopped and reset my watch.  Then I saw someone turn off of another road in front of me running.  It is so rare around here to see another runner I just had to find out who it was.  I caught up to him fairly quick.  It was Chris Spain, an investigator with the Social services Department in our area.  I had only seen him run twice before in the last year.  Ran a very relaxed pace with him for awhile.  It was nice to run and talk to someone.  After we separated it was back home for me.

The foot felt ok,  It hurt most of the night at work last night.  I am still thinking it is just a bruise from tight shoes or something.  But after seeing Deena Kastor's interview on FloTrack, she thought the same thing.

That was a good tempo run there - you did a good job of keeping them all below 7:00 pace. You might want to try icing the foot a little to see if it helps. Also, I have had issues on the top of my foot before, and it turned out to be my shoes pressing too tightly on the top of my foot. Back when I was wearing my Brooks, I changed my lacing technique to the Lydiard technique (google it) and it totally helped. I haven't had issues with any of my Saucony's yet. I suspect it just has to do with everyone's feet being slightly different. I have enough of a raised section on the top of my feet that they got bruised. What's the next race you have planned?

I also have issues with my current Brooks and I'm having pain on the top of my left foot. I also didn't have any problems with the Saucony shoes I had before and I'm now switching back to Saucony. I think it is all about the way the Brooks shoes tie and the fact that the upper part of the show (that part below the laces, don't know the English name of it) is so puffy. I experimented with lacing and it helps some. Icing and Ibuprofen help too.

I googled it. Here is a link:

James & Arie, thanks for the lacing tips. I will read them later and might try it out on tomorrow's run.

James, I have my first half marathon on September 13th. Excited and nervous about it. My longest race ever has only been a 10K. And I believe it has only been 5 of them. 3 as a teenager over 20 years ago, and 2 in the last two years.

Benn, noticed you have run the last few days with no mention of you achilles. What's your plan for the next month or two running wise? Looks like you might finally get healthy just when those brutal New York winters hit.
