Train consistently and smart. Run some local races and hope to lower PR's every once in awhile.

I would love to see a 5:XX for a mile just one more time. Go under 20 in a 5K. And a sub 40 for a 10K.

You know I cannot say with any certainty that this is the case, but I think it is my hamstring that is causing my calf to hurt. The pain is very high on the calf, just below the back of the knee. When I stretch my calf I get very little relief. But when I stretch the hamstring it feels a little better. All of my life, at least since I was a young kid, I have had tight hamstrings. I was and still am the guy who can barely reach to his shins when trying to touch his toes. I have never done enough stretching, but I guess I need to change that way of thinking.

Quads got sore today. Mile 4 was into the wind.

I think you hit the nail on the head with the source of the discomfort. just like my achilles issue stemmed from tight calves I suspect. Kind of brings to mind that childhood song "The achilles tendon's connected to the calf muscle, the calf muscle's connected to the hamstring, the hamstring's connected to the gluts, and that's the end of the song" Kind of catchy don't ya think?

I have always been a firm believer that stretching keeps injuries at bay, and I think that as I didn't spend as much time as I had in past years stretching in my high mileage last fall, that was a problematic source of ouchies for me at least.

Hope the problem heals up quick, and nice run! Nice consistency in miles 5-8!! woo hoo!

Interesting that you mention that - the hamstrings actually attach at the back of your knee, so that could very well be the case. Best time to stretch - after your run, when your muscles are nice and warmed up and lengthened from the exercise. Stretching has always helped for me as well. I may not be the most flexible guy out there, but I very strongly remember when I had a gymnastics class (beginning) at BYU and we had to stretch for the first 15 minutes of class every day. I was amazed at how much flexibility I gained in that semester! Keep up the good work, and stretch out those muscles. The vast majority of us need stretching as preventative maintenance.
